Why Adding Clothing You Love To Your Closet Will End Up Saving You Time

4 minute read | By Maddison McKinley

What’s the Value of a Hanger?

I spend a lot of time thinking about the average woman’s sanity with her wardrobe.

Here’s a question I’ve been thinking about a lot:

“What is the consequence of adding a piece of clothing to your closet that you don’t love?”

I am not talking about the cost of the clothing and the hanger.

I am talking about the intangibles like time, frustration, stress, etc.

Take a moment to reflect on your closet. Do you have pieces in your closet that you don’t love, but end up sifting past, looking at, or ignoring all because you have to? Maybe you just haven’t gotten rid of these pieces yet?

Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That

The #1 resource women cite as their primary barrier to loving their daily looks or wardrobe is time.

Let’s calculate how much time this unloved clothing is costing women each day.

It’s Calculation Time

Each piece in your closet that’s NOT adding value is costing you an extra 15 seconds / day.

You’re using energy to actively sift, stare, ignore, etc.

Let’s say you scan through 40 pieces in your closet as you’re putting together your outfit and you don’t like 50% of the available options.

That’s an extra 5 minutes you could have gotten back in your day.

Calculation: how much the clothing you don’t love costs you in TIME

.25 seconds x # of pieces you don’t love = total time per day wasted by keeping these items in your closet

Reality check: what % of your closet is filled items you love?

Sacred Closet Space

You know where I’m going with this. Adding hangers to your closet that you don’t love will cost you time, frustration, stress, among other feelings.

It’s time to change the mentality of shopping and acquiring new clothing.

See what I did there?!

Let’s Stop the Cycle

Put the Mindful Shopping process to work for you.

The Mindful Shopping process was created to help women seek and buy the clothing that will feel great post-check out and as a part of their wardrobes.

Say This, Not That

The Mindful Shopping process was created to inspire quotes like this one:

“When I do shop in stores, I absolutely ask myself to get real! Are you going to love this?”

-Daily Inspirato Interviewee, 25th interview of the “Daily Inspirato 100”.

…and to avoid quotes like these:

  • “It still has the tags on it. I’ve never worn it and I’ve had it for 2 years.”

  • “My closet is filled with pieces that were priced too well to pass up.”

  • “I bought it, but didn’t have time to return it so I ended up keeping it. I haven’t worn it yet.”

  • “It was an impulse purchase.”

All of these scenarios leave your closet with items you don’t love. Maybe they make you think of a different L word (loath?).
